The women 30-year-old Hayley Sulley and 29-year-old Della Woods wept
in the dock at Liverpool Crown Court as they were handed the sentence
and, while handing it down, Judge Mark Brown remarked that the death had
been "entirely avoidable".
The honorable judge noted that
Clifford Clarke was literally eaten alive when large amounts of tissue
were ingested by the dog and it can be termed as a very shocking,
appalling and tragic event. It was very fortunate that nobody else was
seriously hurt because the dog was completely out of control and
extremely dangerous.
It seems this dog, named Charlie, had
escaped with another of the pair's dogs from their garden in Richard
Kelly Close in the Norris Green area of Liverpool in May 2013. As a
witness said – both the dogs were jumping up at the window and Charlie
was foaming at the mouth.
The dog sank its teeth into the man’s
arm and dragged him around the garden as helpless neighbors looked on –
it chewed off one of Mr Clarke’s arms while the other was severely
wounded - Mr Clarke ultimately died of multiple injuries and loss of
blood.
An armed unit had to be called in to euthanize the dog after it attacked police officers who had been alerted by the neighbors.
